Jeepers have clamored for a V-8 Wrangler for years. The 392 concept proves that such a thing could be a reality as early as next year.
Jeep's 450-hp Wrangler 392 concept is part Jeep, part muscle car, and every bit as burly as we hoped. It's also impressively close to being production-ready—if Jeep follows through with actually building it.
For the 392 concept, Jeep installed a two-inch lift kit, Fox shocks from the Gladiator Rubicon, and 37-inch BFGoodrich mud-terrain tires.
A Warn winch was added to the 392 concept's front bumper. The hood with its fake scoop is from a Gladiator Mojave.
The 392's 17-inch bead-lock wheels are expected to make it to production.
The 392 concept's 6.4-liter V-8 exhales through an active exhaust with a large muffler and four tailpipes hidden beneath its rear bumper.
Jeep says the 392 concept has a total of 13.3 inches of ground clearance and can ford 34 inches of water, 4 inches more than the Wrangler Rubicon.
The Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT contributed its beefed up eight-speed automatic transmission for the 392 concept, and the two-speed Selec-Trac transfer case is borrowed from the Wrangler's Sport and Sahara models.
Strengthened with heavy-duty ARB differential covers, the 392's Dana 44 axles are borrowed from the Wrangler Rubicon and feature electronically locking differentials front and rear and a disconnecting front anti-roll bar.
The 6.4-liter Hemi V-8 is crammed into the Wrangler, with about a finger's width between its accessories and cooling fans, but the bulk of the engine sits behind the front axle line.
The 392 concept is roughly 200 pounds heavier than a Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon with the standard 3.6-liter V-6.
The 392 concept's interior is stock Wrangler Rubicon aside from its custom Red Rock leather upholstery.
