Driving Bentley's roughly $2 million Bacalar is a glimpse into the old craft of coachbuilding.
With Bacalar, Bentley's Mulliner division revives the concept of coachbuilt models with unique bodies fitted to existing vehicle platforms—for when a $200K-plus Continental GT convertible just isn't special enough.
Only 12 examples of the Bacalar will be produced and will cost about $2 million each. All have already been sold.
Sadly, buyers in the United States will only be able to import the Bacalar under limited show-and-display regulations.
The Bacalar is the product of Bentley's Mulliner special-vehicle division, which plans to produce additional coachbuilt models in the future.
Bentley has yet to build any customer Bacalars, let alone a fully functioning prototype. Our drive in the United Kingdom was in the sole concept version, which was intended to debut at this year's now-canceled Geneva auto show.
Based on the existing Continental GT, the all-wheel-drive Bacalar is powered by a 650-hp twin-turbo W-12 backed by an eight-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.
Bentley claims the topless Bacalar should be able to reach 60 mph in a conservative 3.5 seconds and top out in excess of 200 mph.
Almost every surface of the Bacalar concept's interior has been covered in exotic and expensive materials, including a dashboard made from 5000-year-old petrified river wood recovered from a peat bog.
The Bacalar's quilted leather seats each have 148,000 individual stitches.
All of the Bacalar's body panels are unique, with the only carryover parts from the Continental being the windshield and the door handles.
