The Ranger's Ford Performance Level 1 off-road package adds beefy Fox shocks for a better ride, but its flashy graphics are what really catches your attention.
The 2020 Ford Ranger can now be optioned with three Ford Performance off-road packages with varying degrees of capability. While even the Level 1 kit adds upgraded Fox dampers, the improvement in capability over the Ranger's factory FX4 package is minimal.
There's only one engine option for the 2020 Ford Ranger, a turbocharged 2.3-liter four-cylinder good for 270 horsepower and 310 pound-feet of torque. A 10-speed automatic is the only transmission option.
The full name of our test truck is longer than its bed: Ford Ranger SuperCrew 4x4 Lariat Ford Performance Level 1. That breaks down to top-of-the-line trim, largest cab configuration, the FX4 off-road package, and the introductory level of Ford Performance's off-road packages.
With a 1560-pound payload and a 43-cubic-foot cargo capacity, the Ranger can carry quite a load. It has six built-in tiedowns in the bed and a cargo light but no in-bed power outlet or adjustable rail system.
One of the most visible parts of the $2495 Ford Performance Level 1 off-road package are new 17-inch wheels painted Dyno Gray.
The Ranger's interior readouts specific to off-road settings are helpful, but a larger display would be nice, especially when trying to read it while bouncing over rutted dirt roads.
