Despite being an attractive new model, Toyota's hybrid-only Venza shares too much in common with its lesser sibling to feel meaningfully different.
The Toyota Venza returns for 2021 as a mid-size crossover with two rows of seats and a standard all-wheel-drive hybrid system. It's closely related to the RAV4 hybrid, sharing its platform and powertrain, but the similarities between the two SUVs are so great that the Venza struggles to be a meaningful, better vehicle.
Unlike the previous Camry-based Venza that was created specifically for the United States market, the new model is essentially the same vehicle as the Japan-market Toyota Harrier.
The clean look of the Venza gives it an attractive presentation without the oversized grille or overwrought lines seen on many other Toyota models.
The only powertrain available in the Venza is a hybrid system that employs a 2.5-liter inline-four gasoline engine and three electric motors. Combined output is 219 horsepower.
All-wheel drive is standard equipment, courtesy of an electric motor that drives the rear axle.
The Venza returned 36 mpg in our 75-mph highway fuel-economy test. Although that is 1 mpg less than the RAV4 hybrid managed, it's excellent for a compact SUV.
The Venza shares its TNGA platform with the Toyota RAV4, although our measurements show that the Venza is actually holds less cargo than its less-expensive sibling.
Befitting its higher price, the Venza's interior looks slightly more upscale than the RAV4's and features a nice mix of materials.
The Venza's dashboard design places form over function, as its touch-sensitive controls are more frustrating to use than the RAV4's physical buttons and knobs.
