The U.S. won't get an S line model, but what we will get is a premium sedan starting under $35,000 that's refined to near perfection.
We've already driven the latest Audi A3 is Sportback (hatchback) form, but the sedan is the body style that will ultimately come to the United States next year as a 2022 model. We drove it in Germany and it portends promising things for the economical end of Audi's car lineup.
The 2022 A3 sedan dons Audi's latest chiseled design language that employs more angular styling cues and good proportions.
While the German-spec A3 sedan we drove featured a turbocharged 1.5-liter inline-four (there's also a 1.0-liter turbo-three and a TDI diesel version), the U.S. model will have a 201-hp 2.0-liter turbo-four backed by a 48-volt mild-hybrid system.
A seven-speed dual-clutch automatic will be the only transmission choice on U.S. A3 sedans.
With its larger and more pronounced grille, the 2022 Audi A3 sedan gains a more substantial presence on the road.
Front-wheel drive will be standard on the new A3 sedan but Audi's Quattro all-wheel drive will be optional.
We expect the U.S. A3 sedan to hit 60 mph in around six seconds and and top out at about 130 mph.
Along with large and vibrant display screens, including the 10.1-inch center touchscreen, the A3 also sports a new futuristic shift knob.
The new A3's wheelbase is still 103.8 inches, but its length
increases from 175.5 to 177.2 inches, it is wider than before (71.7
instead of 70.7 inches), and it stands slightly taller (56.3, up
from 55.7 inches).
