The 2020 Alpina B3 is the long-time BMW tuner's take on the latest 3-series. With 456 horsepower from it twin-turbo inline-six, it plays in a similar field as BMW's own M3 yet adopts a decidedly more refined (and exclusive) approach to speed.
Unlike Alpina's larger and more expensive B7 and XB7 models, the more affordable B3 is not earmarked for the United States market.
The B3 shares much in common with the M340i xDrive, including its rear-biased all-wheel-drive system, mechanical limited-slip rear differential, and eight-speed automatic transmission.
Under its hood, the B3 adopts BMW's S58 twin-turbo 3.0-liter inline-six from the current X3 M and X4 M SUVs. Minor tweaks result in a slight drop in power—456 horses versus the M cars' 473 or 503—yet torque climbs significantly to 516 pound-feet.
The B3 should be able to clear 60 mph in 3.5 seconds, and Alpina claims it tops out at an unrestricted 186 mph for the wagon and 188 mph for the sedan.
In typical Alpina fashion, the B3 is beautifully understated inside and out. Our pick is the even more unassuming B3 Touring wagon.
Eibach springs and retuned adaptive dampers from the M340i provide the B3 with both impressive long-haul ride comfort and solid body control when pushed hard on a racetrack.
There are minimal Alpina touches inside the B3, the most prominent being a leather-wrapped steering wheel featuring the company's badge in place of the BMW roundel and the traditional manual-shift buttons on the back of the spokes.
