Kia redesigns the Optima family sedan, puts it on a new platform, imbues it with a modern look, and changes the name to K5.
What's in a name? Kia's new family sedan goes from being called the Optima to the K5. It had always been called the K5 in Kia's home market of South Korea. Whatever it's called, the new mid-size car is a compelling entry that brings attractive styling, an upscale interior, and tons of features and technology.
The 2021 Kia K5 is built on the Hyundai-Kia group's new N3 platform, which also underpins the redesigned 2020 Hyundai Sonata.
The K5's LX, LXS, GT-Line, and EX trim levels are all powered by a turbocharged 1.6-liter inline-four that produces 180 horsepower and 195 pound-feet of torque. A conventional eight-speed automatic is the only transmission choice.
The volume LXS and GT-Line models also can be equipped with an optional all-wheel-drive system, which is bundled with otherwise optional equipment and costs $2100 and $3700, respectively.
Available later this year will be the K5's top-spec GT model, which features a 290-hp 2.5-liter turbo-four mated to an eight-speed dual-clutch automatic.
Pricing for the K5 starts at a competitive $24,455, although a well-equipped EX model can cost more than $32K.
GT-Line models (and the upcoming GT) are distinguished by their slightly more aggressive front and rear bumpers and small rear spoilers.
Both of the K5 models that we drove rolled on 18-inch wheels shod with 235/45R-18 Pirelli P Zero All Season tires; 16-inchers are standard on lesser trim levels.
GT-Line models can be optioned with red leatherette upholstery and trim with GT-line logos emblazoned on the front headrests.
All K5's come with an intuitive and high-function 8.0-inch touchscreen interface, but the optional 10.3-inch unit is far more impressive in its presentation.
