The 2020 Bentley Flying Spur is the company's sportiest four-door sedan. It's based on the same platform as the Porsche Panamera, but it looks, feels, and drives like a totally different—and much more luxurious—automobile. With a base price of $219,425, it should.
The Flying Spur shares its platform with the Porsche Panamera, which includes such ride-and-handling technologies as adaptive dampers, electronically controlled front and rear anti-roll bars, and four-wheel steering.
The Flying Spur is powered by the company's twin-turbocharged W-12 engine, which develops 626 horsepower and puts out 664 pound-feet of torque.
No matter where you look on or inside of a Flying Spur, you'll find exceptional attention to detail. Body-panel gaps, paint quality, and the interior's fit and finishes all approach perfection.
The cabin's leathery aroma is so intoxicating it could be on the DEA's list of controlled substances. Virtually every interior surface is covered in the most supple leather imaginable.
The massively powerful 12-cylinder engine propels this 5560-pound mega-luxe sedan to 60 mph in a scant 3.5 seconds. That performance is enabled in part by the traction advantages of its standard all-wheel-drive system.
Flying Spurs can be fitted with 22-inch diameter wheels and tires in either all-season or summer spec. Our summer-tire-shod test car circled the skidpad with an amazing 0.98 g of grip.
As capable as the Flying Spur is at going fast in a straight line and howling around corners, when driven gently it's serene and nearly silent.
The Flying Spur's rear seats can recline, tilt, move forward and aft, and administer calming massages, yet the rear compartment isn't as over-the-top luxurious as that in a Rolls-Royce Phantom or Mercedes-Maybach S650.
An iPhone-like device housed in the rear center console controls audio, navigation, seat heating and ventilation, rear-seat massage, the power side-window shades, and the moonroof close-outs.
In our informal drive-by poll, the Flying Spur didn't turn as many heads as expected. Blame its sleek, Audi-like styling and white paint job. It would probably look more imposing in a darker hue.
