The 2021 Toyota RAV4 Prime adds a potent plug-in hybrid powertrain and increased efficiency to Toyota's best-selling vehicle.
The RAV4 Prime is powered by a 177-hp inline-four paired with two motor-generators that produce 179 horses at the front axle. An additional 53-hp motor drives the rear axle.
The RAV4 Prime surges to 60 mph in just 5.4 seconds and covers the quarter-mile in 14.0 seconds at 100 mph.
With an 18.1-kWh lithium-ion battery pack, the EPA estimates the RAV4 Prime can travel 42 miles on a single charge. At 75 mph, we covered 32 miles before the battery was depleted.
The Prime is available in two trims. The SE starts at $39,220, and base price for the XSE is $42,520.
The RAV4 qualifies for a $7500 federal tax credit, lowering the price below that of well-equipped RAV4 hybrid models.
On SE and XSE trims, a 3.3-kWh onboard charger is standard. Opting for the XSE model unlocks the ability to select a faster 6.6-kWh charger.
The RAV4 Prime's interior is nicely appointed. Cloth seats are standard on SE models while the XSE get synthetic leather upholstery.
The SE models come standard with an 8.0-inch touchscreen infotainment display. Moving up to the XSE trim nets a 9.0-inch unit.
All-wheel drive is standard on all trim levels of the RAV4 Prime.
Believe it or not, the RAV4 Prime is quicker than a four-cylinder Toyota Supra from five to 60 mph, as well as from 30 to 50 mph and 50 to 70 mph.
