The 2020 Model Y is the first Tesla that doesn't purport to do things in a bold and radically new way. Rather, it's a crossover version of the Model 3 sedan aimed squarely at the mainstream buyer.
Based on the Tesla Model 3, the 2020 Model Y crossover brings impressive range and all the high-tech swagger that the brand's EVs are known for. Yet, the Y's driving dynamics suffer from the crossover conversion and make it feel less satisfying of a vehicle.
Compared to the sleeker Model 3 sedan, the Model Y's bloated proportions are less flattering and rather bland.
On our 75-mph highway test route, the Model Y posted 220 miles of real-world range. That's just 10 miles less than the Model 3.
The Model Y Long Range is quick, posting a 4.4-second zero-to-60-mph time. Our comparable long-term Model 3, however, is still 0.4 second quicker.
The Model Y's taller proportions result in a higher center of gravity and greater body roll in corners versus the 3.
The Model Y Long Range's two-motor all-wheel-drive powertrain is good for 384 horsepower and 376 lb-ft of torque.
Our Model Y Long Range test vehicle weighed in at 4386 pounds.
Tesla says a Model Y can restore 158 miles of range with a 15-minute stop at a Supercharger.
Build quality was not strong with our Model Y test vehicle. We noticed inconsistent panel gaps, orange-peel paint, creaks and rattles from its structure, and wires dangling beneath the dash.
Like the Model 3, almost all of the Model Y's controls and handled via the center touchscreen.
