Toyota gives its rugged 4Runner SUV some overlanding off-road appeal with the Venture special edition's roof-mounted cargo basket.

Basically an appearance package, the 4Runner Venture model gets the same 17-inch wheels as the 4Runner TRD Pro. It features black exterior trim and a standard roof-mounted Yakima MegaWarrior cargo basket, which adds considerable cargo versatility.
We expected the Venture's roof basket to increase wind noise significantly, but you'd never know it's there. Unfortunately, the 4Runner's optional TRD Pro exhaust system drones on the highway a bit too much for our liking.
Despite its dated powertrain, the 4Runner's seemingly endless popularity is easy to understand. It's family friendly, ruggedly handsome, and highly capable.
All 4Runner models get the same part-time four-wheel-drive system with a two-speed low-range transfer case. The Venture is one of the few 4Runners to get a standard locking rear differential.
The 4Runner's 9.6 inches of ground clearance is plenty for most off-road adventures. It is an accomplished hill climber, although its long rear overhang will scrape the ground when tackling steep inclines.
Like the TRD Off-Road Premium, the Venture rides on Bridgestone Dueler H/T tires, sized 265/70R-17.
