A new four-cylinder base engine makes Cadillac's best seller more fuel efficient but less desirable as a compact luxury SUV.
The 2020 Cadillac XT5 receives a range of updates for the new model year, including the addition of a new turbocharged four-cylinder base engine. The XT5's new turbo 2.0-liter inline-four, which develops 237 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque, is the standard powerplant for entry-level Luxury and mid-level Premium Luxury models.
The familiar 310-hp 3.6-liter V-6 remains a $1000 option on the XT5's Premium Luxury trim level and comes standard on the top-range Sport model.
A smooth and smartly tuned nine-speed automatic transmission pairs with either engine and replaces last year's eight-speed unit.
The 2020 XT5 with the 2.0-liter engine and front-wheel drive carries a competitive 24-mpg combined estimate from the EPA versus 21 mpg for a comparable V-6 model. Subtract 1 mpg with all-wheel drive. In the real world, our four-cylinder test car averaged 20 mpg to the V-6's meager 16 mpg.
At the test track, our front-drive 2.0-liter test vehicle posted a 7.6-second zero-to-60-mph time, which is 1.5 seconds slower than the time we previously recorded for an all-wheel-drive V-6 Sport model.
At full throttle, the 71-decibel sound reading that we recorded inside our 2.0-liter test vehicle is five decibels quieter than the V-6's measurement.
Despite the inclusion of adaptive dampers, a slightly stiffer suspension setup, and 20-inch wheels with our test vehicle's $4850 Platinum package, the XT5 is more at home when cruising than hustling down back roads.
The Platinum package dresses up the XT5's interior with additional leather upholstery and a microsuede headliner. It also bundles together loads of additional amenities that significantly up the XT5's price yet don't dramatically improve the cabin's feeling of luxury.
