Highlighted by a new grille design and updated front and rear bumpers, all of the 2020 Passat's body panels are new except for the roof.
The sole engine for the 2020 Passat is a turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-four. It makes the same 174 horsepower as last year but now generates 206 lb-ft of torque, an increase of 22 pound-feet.
A six-speed automatic is the only transmission offered in the 2020 Passat. All-wheel drive is not available on any model.
At the test track, our SEL model test car ran to 60 mph in 8.3 seconds. That time is 0.3 second slower than we recorded for a similar 2018 model and well off the pace of most of the VW's competition.
Attractive pricing is one of the 2020 Passat's strengths. The base S model starts at $23,915 and top-level SEL versions like our test car sticker for $32,015.
Newly standard equipment on all 2020 Passats include automatic emergency braking, blind-spot detection, rear cross-traffic alert, and satellite radio.
The Passat's 6.3-inch central infotainment touchscreen works well enough but is rather small by current standards.
One of the Passat's greatest virtues continues to be its spacious back seat that offers loads of rear legroom.
