The Porsche 911 Carrera is the latest in the iconic line of rear-engine sports cars that date back six model generations to 1964. The Carrera 4 is the base model 911 equipped with Porsche's all-wheel-drive system. It's powered by the same 3.0-liter engine as in the 443-hp Carrera S versions, detuned for non-S models to 379 horsepower.
All base Carreras come equipped with Porsche's brilliant eight-speed PDK dual-clutch automatic transmission. It delivers velvety operation in town and lightning-quick shifts. A manual gearbox is not available on base Carreras.
Like all 911s for the past 56 years, the Carrera 4 offers tiny rear seats that can accommodate only those still learning their ABCs from Sesame Street.
Our test car was fitted with optional 20-inch front and 21-inch rear Carrera Classic wheels, which are one inch larger in diameter than the standard rims.
With the larger Carrera Classic wheels come wider Pirelli P Zero PZ4 summer tires, sized 245/35R-20 in front and 305/30R-21 in the rear.
The Carrera 4's all-wheel-drive system gives it extra traction for brutal launch-control starts, enabling the 3505-pound car to leap to 60 mph in just 3.4 seconds.
It's taken decades, but steady chassis development has enabled Porsche to evolve the 911 from being a twitchy handful prone to spinouts to a faultless handler and exciting track-day car.
The optional sport exhaust growls like an angry tiger and sounds so rich you'll want to keep the windows down.
All 911s are beautifully assembled and feature tight panel gaps, lustrous paint, and carefully fitted interior pieces.
The new 911's dashboard pays homage to 56 years of production by continuing to employ a five-gauge instrument cluster. Four of the gauges are now digital; the centrally located tachometer is still an analog unit.
