Hyundai's Ioniq gets updated styling, new interior tech, and safety features that should give potential Prius buyers something else to consider.

The Ioniq, along with its Kia Niro crossover sibling, continues to be offered in hybrid, plug-in, and full-electric models. We focused on the conventional hybrid for this review.
The Hyundai Ioniq hybrid slightly undercuts the entry point of the non-plug-in Prius, with base prices ranging from $24,175 for the base Blue model to $32,175 for the top-spec Limited trim.
The Ioniq hybrid produces a combined 134 horsepower from a 104-hp 1.6-liter inline-four and a 43-hp motor-generator fed by a 1.6-kWh lithium battery stuffed beneath its rear seat.
While the Ioniq hybrid's six-speed dual-clutch automatic is a bit sluggish, it is a far more satisfying means of transferring power and torque than the Prius's mushy continuously variable automatic transmission.
Stay out of the left lane: The last Ioniq hybrid we tested, a 2017 model, needed 8.9 seconds to reach 60 mph. That's quicker than a Prius, but this Hyundai is far happier cruising around leisurely.
New designs for the grille and wheels, as well as revised front and rear bumpers, freshen the 2020 Ioniq's aesthetics without making it look like a spaceship.
Additional driver aids, including standard forward-collision warning, automated emergency braking, lane-departure warning, and lane-keeping assist as well as optional blind-spot monitoring and adaptive cruise control up the 2020 Ioniq hybrid's tech quotient.
The Ioniq hybrid's standard 10-year or 100,000-mile powertrain warranty also include lifetime coverage for its battery pack.
Unlike the Prius with its central gauge pod and funky stub of a joystick shifter on the dash, the Ioniq hybrid features a conventional instrument cluster in front of the driver and a traditional automatic shift lever between the seats.
The Ioniq hybrid's entry-level Blue model carries an EPA combined estimate of 58 mpg, which tops all other hybrids without a plug. The Limited model has a still-frugal 55-mpg combined estimate.
