Commemorating 63 years of Land Cruiser, the new Heritage model dons BBS wheels, ditches the running boards, and is as swanky as ever on the trail.
The Toyota Land Cruiser is due for a redesign, which means it's time for a special edition. The 2020 Heritage Edition model embraces an overlanding aesthetic, expanding cargo room by ditching the standard model's third-row seats and adding a Yakima roof rack. Bronze-colored forged BBS wheels complement a monochrome exterior that's available in only two colors: black and white. The base price is $89,110, which is an extra $2330 over the standard Land Cruiser.
Bronze-colored BBS 18-inch wheels look rugged. And, since they're forged aluminum, they are.
Losing the running boards underscores the Land Cruiser's height. Its 21.0-degree breakover angle matches that of the Jeep Wrangler Sahara.
The Land Cruiser's split hatch and tailgate remains the ideal tailgating setup, offering a place to sit while providing some overhead protection from the elements.
Retro badges remind you that, if this were an anniversary edition, it would be the Land Cruiser's 63rd.
The Heritage Edition's Yakima MegaWarrior roof rack adds some overlanding flair—a $449 value.
The 381-hp 5.7-liter V-8 is shared with the Toyota Sequoia and Tundra. It gets the job done, but it returns an EPA combined estimate of only 14 mpg.
At nearly $90,000, not many Heritage Editions will likely find their way off road in the immediate future. But, they will eventually.
The absence of the Land Cruiser's third row drops the Heritage model's passenger capacity from eight to five, but it does open up more cargo space.
The Land Cruiser's interior materials are a huge step up from the Sequoia's, save for the curious exception of the fake wood on the steering wheel and shifter.
