Call it bad luck or bad timing, but the new CLA35 seems to be the star-crossed model of the second-generation CLA-class lineup.
The Mercedes-AMG CLA35 got a complete redesign for 2020, as did the rest of the CLA lineup, which includes the entry-level CLA250 and even higher-performance CLA45 models. As an AMG-tuned version of the CLA-class, the 35 has sporty design cues such as larger front air intakes, a blacked-out grille, and model-specific wheel designs.
The CLA-class's exterior design is smoother and more refined for the second generation, but there are still a few extra creases on the hood and doors that help to differentiate it from the A-class sedan.
The CLA's turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine has 302 horsepower and makes 295 lb-ft of torque. We expect it to reach 60 mph in 4.6 seconds.
The 35 has an AMG-specific exhaust with a flap that modulates sound based on the selected drive mode. Nothing you do will make this sound like a V-8 or an inline-six, though.
The CLA-class has four doors, but Mercedes uses a swept-back roof and frameless doors to help it emulate a coupe.
The 35's interior is comfortable (at least in the front row) and can have red piping and seatbelts to emphasize the CLA's sporty character.
Mercedes' MBUX infotainment system is new to the CLA this year. The system is controlled by a touchpad mounted on the center console. A mini touchpad on the steering wheel controls the digital gauge cluster.
The CLA35 has just 12 cubic feet of trunk space, so it's not the best choice for a long trip or a Costco run.
The 33.9 inches of rear legroom and 35.7 inches of rear headroom make the backseat feel cramped for adults.
The new infotainment system can come with an augmented-reality feature that overlays navigation instructions on street-level images to make it easier for drivers get around in unfamiliar places.
