The 2020 Maserati Ghibli S Q4 GranSport has been in production for seven years, during which time it has matured into an accomplished luxury sport sedan. It delivers athletic driving dynamics with a comfortable ride, luscious interior appointments, and plenty of power to back up its aggressive looks.
The Ghibli S models are offered in GranSport and GranLusso trims, the former being the slightly sportier version. The Q4 designation is applied to cars equipped with all-wheel drive.
Compared to GranLusso models, Ghiblis S GranSports are equipped with standard adaptive dampers, slightly larger Brembo brakes, a modestly more-aggressive front bumper, and the availability of carbon-fiber interior trim and dark-colored wheels and exterior trim.
All Ghibli S models are powered by a twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter V-6 that pumps out 424 horsepower and 428 lb-ft of torque. Power is routed through a ZF eight-speed automatic. Standard Ghiblis use a 345-hp version of the same engine.
The S Q4's V-6 takes a beat to reach full power off the line yet pulls strongly after its turbos spool up. The engine note is a sweet, distant howl.
Thanks to the traction afforded by all-wheel drive, a Ghibli S Q4 GranSport should be able to reach 60 mph in about 4.5 seconds, placing it mid-pack in acceleration versus rivals like the Mercedes-AMG CLS53, BMW 840i xDrive, and Audi S7.
The Ghibli S Q4 GranSport has an uncanny way with the road. It's responsive and fun to drive, as a sports sedan should be, but its ride is well-rounded enough to be comfortable for long highway trips.
With a starting price of $85,290, the Ghibli S Q4 GranSport is a big ask, but it's actually no more expensive than its competition from BMW, Audi, and Mercedes-AMG.
The cabin of the S Q4 GranSport is luxuriously appointed when optioned with the Pieno Fiore option that covers almost every surface of the cabin in gorgeous, supple leather.
There are comfortable seats and plenty of room in the front of the Ghibli, but legroom is snug for six-footers in the rear.
If the Ghibli's Uconnect infotainment interface seems familiar, that's because it is borrowed from other Fiat Chrysler products, albeit with Maserati-specific graphics applied.
