The Lexus GX460 continues with a 301-hp 4.6-liter V-8 mated to a six-speed automatic transmission as standard.
A capable all-wheel-drive system with a Torsen limited-slip center differential and two-speed transfer car also are included.
The GX460 is old-school SUV stuff: body-on-frame construction, solid rear axle, and substantial off-road capability.
The GX460 can run to 60 mph in 7.2 seconds, but it feels lumbering in day-to-day driving, thanks in part to its hefty 6266-pound curb weight.
A $1570 Off-Road package is new on top-spec Luxury models for 2020. It includes Crawl Control (low-speed off-road cruise control), a Multi-Terrain Select system for configuring the chassis and drivetrain for various surfaces, additional cameras for seeing around the vehicle on the trail, a transmission cooler, and a skid plate under the fuel tank.
On 19-inch all-season tires, our test vehicle managed only 0.76 g of grip around the skidpad and a lengthy 188-foot stop from 70 mph.
The big GX is thirsty, too, averaging 15 mpg while in our care and returning only 20 mpg on our 75-mph highway fuel-economy test.
Along with its massive new grille, the 2020 GX460 also sports updated triple-beam LED headlights.
Pricing for the GX460 starts at $54,025, but opt for the top Luxury model and go crazy with options and you'll increase the outlay to more than $70K.
Despite its age, the GX460 is impressively quiet inside at highway speeds.
