Minor material and technology updates give us another excuse to fall for Alfa's characterful, high-performance Stelvio SUV.
The 2020 Alfa Romeo Stelvio Quadrifoglio is a mouthful, and it's also a handful—in the best way. Hiding behind our test car's gorgeously spindly 20-inch wheels were $8000 carbon-ceramic brakes, complete with $500 painted yellow calipers.
New for 2020 is a larger, 8.8-inch center screen running a new, widget-based infotainment setup. In addition to the usual stuff—Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Wi-Fi hotspot—the Stelvio monitors brake temps and provides a way to measure acceleration times and braking distances.
A number of material finishes on the Stelvio's center console are improved for 2020, including a leather-wrapped shift lever and upgraded bezels on the knobs.
There are still some cheap-looking grained plastics on the dash and doors, especially at our test vehicle's $94,095 as-tested price. But there are also high-quality touches, such as the white-and-green stitching—carrying the theme of the Quadrifoglio's cloverleaf badge inside the cabin—on the dash, doors, and seats, and even into the second row.
Also new this year is adaptive cruise control that includes lane-centering functionality. However, it only works when driving on major highways and requires the driver to keep a hand on the wheel at all times.
If practicality is your priority, look elsewhere. The Stelvio's back seat is on the small side.
The Stelvio's average fuel economy—when driven in the way that makes us love it—is 13 mpg. But we managed 21 mpg during our 75-mph highway fuel-economy test.
As before, the Stelvio Quadrifoglio is powered by a 505-hp, 90-degree 2.9-liter V-6 than revs to 7000 rpm and sends tingles down your spine.
