The 2020 BMW M850i xDrive Gran Coupe has all the athleticism and road presence we expect in a six-figure luxury sedan. It offers effortless power and an attractive design, but none of it comes at a bargain.
While a massive fish-mouth grille is propagating throughout BMW's lineup, the 2020 M850i is still wearing the more restrained prior iteration of the kidney grille. We have our fingers crossed that it will stay that way.
BMW calls the M850i a Gran Coupe to emphasize its sleek fastback profile, but its rear doors and trunk make it a sedan.
Our M850i test car was outfitted with swanky-looking glass trim on the shift knob, rotary infotainment controls, and climate controls mounted on the center stack. That option runs $650. The standard fittings are piano-black or matte-black plastic.
The M850i can come with a 16-speaker Bowers & Wilkins surround-sound audio system for $3400.
The M850i uses a 10.3-inch center display screen and BMW's newest iDrive infotainment system. The rotary knob on the center console now responds to inputs with haptic feedback.
BMW has optimistically placed three seatbelts in the second row, but the middle seat's legroom is entirely taken up by the tall center tunnel, so don't expect to comfortably fit more than four people in the M850i.
Our test car had bright-red leather trim on the seats and door panels, but if that's too loud for your taste you can also choose from several neutral-toned leather shades for your car's interior.
At first glance, the 8-series Gran Coupe is barely distinguishable from the 8-series Coupe. But the geometry of the car has been tweaked to allow more headroom for front-seat passengers and a larger trunk opening.
The design of the metalwork around the M850i's rear glass—intended to be reminiscent of a flying buttress—requires that the metal folding be finished by hand as opposed to by machine.
The $4100 M Carbon Exterior package netted us carbon-fiber mirror caps, tailpipe surrounds, and front-fascia inserts. A carbon-fiber roof is also available for $2800, but it would require you to forgo the standard panoramic sunroof.
