The GLS63's twin-turbo 4.0-liter V-8 produces 603 horsepower at 6500 rpm and 627 lb-ft of torque at 2500 rpm.
A standard nine-speed automatic transmission is tuned well for around-town cruising, but it can be slow to downshift and often is in too high a gear during spirited driving.
As with AMG's equally new, two-row GLE63 S, the GLS63's V-8 is the first from AMG to get Mercedes's 48-volt EQ Boost hybrid system, which sandwiches an electric motor-generator between the engine and the transmission.
The GLS63 features six drive-mode settings, including Comfort, Sport, Sport+, Trail, and Sand.
The AMG GLS63 comes dressed for its mission, with AMG's familiar grille with vertical louvers, a new front bumper with mouthy black air intakes, and flared wheel arches.
It looks even better from the rear with its wide stance, rear diffuser, and big rectangular exhaust pipes.
AMG fits the a with 21-inch wheels as standard, although 22- and 23-inchers are available.
The 23-inch wheels with massive Michelin Pilot Sport 4S summer tires—sized 285/40R-23 in the front and 325/35R-23 in back—provided the examples we drove with plenty of grip. Ride comfort, however, does suffer with the big, heavy rollers.
The GLS63 comes standard with all-wheel drive, a limited-slip rear differential, and massive brakes with 15.7-inch front rotors and six-piston calipers.
Inside the GLS63, you'll find a chunky three-spoke steering wheel with paddle shifters and heated, ventilated, and well-bolstered AMG sports seats covered in nappa leather.
