The X5 M's motivation comes from the same twin-turbo 4.4-liter V-8 found in BMW's M5 supersedan. The engine is rated at 600 horsepower in standard trim and 617 in the Competition model.
The X5 M's ZF eight-speed automatic transmission offers three increasingly aggressive driver-adjustable settings for shift speed and firmness.
To create the M, the X5's chassis is upgraded to with M-tuned springs, adaptive dampers, and an active front anti-roll bar. This performance variant also has bigger brakes than the base ute and an electronically controlled limited-slip rear differential.
The X5 M's all-wheel-drive system apportions the engine's torque through a multi-plate clutch, with the majority of torque sent to the rear wheels in normal driving. When rear-tire slip is detected, the system transfers the necessary torque to the front.
It takes big brakes to slow a 177-mph two-and-a-half-ton rocket. The X5 M is equipped with six-piston front calipers squeezing 15.6-inch rotors and single-piston rear calipers working on 15.0-inch rotors. The braking system allows the driver to adjust pedal response and feel through two settings: Comfort and Sport.
The X5 M's chassis-control system offers three standard drive-mode settings—Comfort, Sport, and Sport Plus. Competition models add a Track mode that dials back stability-control intervention to its lowest level short of fully off.
The optional $2500 M Driver's package increases the X5 M's claimed top speed from a governed 155 mph to 177. It also comes with an open invitation to a driving school at one of BMW's two U.S. Performance Centers.
The X5 M is as luxurious as it is fast. The cabin is dressed in soft leathers and equipped with everything from a panoramic sunroof to heated front armrests. A 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, a 12.3-inch central infotainment screen, and a Harman/Kardon audio system are all standard.
Available exterior colors include Alpine White, Carbon Black, Black Sapphire, Mineral White, Marina Bay Blue, Donnington Grey, Manhattan Green, Tornado Red, Tanzanite Blue II, and Ametrin.
Pricing for the 600-hp 2020 BMW X5 M starts at $106,095. The 617-hp X5 M Competition will set you back an additional $9000.
