The NX300h has creased and folded sheetmetal and is highlighted by a distinctive spindle grille and angular headlights that are underlined by unique daytime running lights.
The NX300h features a 2.5-liter gasoline four-cylinder engine paired with an electric motor-generator that feeds the front wheels through a continuously variable automatic transmission. A second electric motor is mounted on the rear axle to provide standard all-wheel drive.
The NX300h has leisurely acceleration and a long emergency-braking distance, but it isolates outside bumps and noise well enough to satisfy its luxury designation.
The EPA estimates the NX300h will get 33/30/31 mpg city/highway/combined. On our 75-mph highway fuel-economy test, the Lexus achieved 29 mpg.
Lexus has crafted a handsome cabin inside the NX300h, with rich materials on most surfaces. While its dashboard design is polarizing, the driver sits up high and has excellent outward visibility.
Overall, we find the NX300h interior striking, but we had some irritating interactions with the infotainment system's touchpad controller, and the awkwardly placed controls near the driver's left knee.
A large 10.3-inch screen is mounted on top of the dashboard and features standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The infotainment system can also be upgraded with built-in navigation and a powerful Mark Levinson audio system.
The NX300h has competitive passenger space, but it lacks interior cubbies to store small items. Apart from the door pockets and deep center-console bin, it only has a pair of cupholders to complement the small shelf on the center stack.
While its back seat and cargo area aren't particularly large, the NX300h does provide more practical space than the tinier Lexus UX250h. We managed to fit eight carry-on suitcases behind the rear seats in the NX compared with only four in the UX.
Starting at $40,455, our NX300h was loaded with nearly $10,500 worth of options that pushed its as-tested price to $50,905. The most expensive upgrades included the $1515 triple-beam LED headlights, $2920 Mark Levinson/Navigation, and the $3270 Premium package that includes several driver assists, heated and ventilated front seats, memory settings for the driver's seat, and a sunroof.
