The RS Q3 is based on the Volkswagen Group's flexible MQB platform that underpins both the regular Q3 compact luxury SUV and its new Sportback variant. The RS model is available in both body styles.
The RS Q3 shares its turbocharged 2.5-liter inline-five with the Audi TT RS coupe and RS3 sedan. In the SUV, it produces 394 horsepower and 354 lb-ft of torque.
The sole transmission is a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic.
The RS Q3's standard all-wheel-drive system defaults to routing 80 percent of the engine's torque to the rear wheels. The rear-biased setup helps provide the hot Q3 feel impressively neutral.
The RS Q3 comes standard with conventional cast-iron brake rotors, with lighter carbon-ceramic rotors as an option.
Despite formidable competition in the U.S. market from the redesigned Mercedes-AMG GLA45 and Porsche Macan Turbo, Audi refuses to let the RS Q3 cross the Atlantic—just as it has done since the model's debut in 2013.
We expect the Audi RS Q3 to be able to reach 60 mph in less than four seconds.
Exterior tweaks over the standard Q3 include flared wheel arches, a wider grille treatment, and twin oval exhaust pipes.
By far the RS Q3's most endearing trait is the characteristic warble from its five-cylinder engine.
