The 2020 CX-9's 250-hp turbocharged 2.5-liter inline-four has been massaged to produce 320 lb-ft of torque, which is 10 lb-ft more than before.
A six-speed automatic remains the CX-9's sole transmission choice.
Front-wheel drive is standard with all-wheel drive a $1900 option on most trim levels except the top-spec Signature, which is only available as all-wheel drive.
Our Signature test vehicle ran to 60 mph in 7.0 seconds flat, or 0.3 second quicker than a similar 2019 model.
The CX-9 remains the driver's choice of mid-size three-row utes. Ours recorded a respectable 0.85 g of grip around the skidpad and a 169-foot stop from 70 mph.
The 2020 CX-9 averaged 20 mpg while in our care and posted 25 mpg on our 75-mph highway fuel-economy test, or 1 mpg less than its EPA estimate.
The CX-9's interior is small for its class, particularly in terms of third-row space and cargo room, but it remains beautifully finished when equipped with the Signature's upgraded trim and materials.
Second-row captain's chairs are newly available on mid-level Touring and Grand Touring models and are standard on the Signature trim. A three-across bench is standard otherwise.
A 7.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system is standard on the CX-9, with the larger upgrade unit growing from 8.0 to 9.0 inches.
The 2020 CX-9's base price of $34,835 for a front-drive Sport model is slightly higher than last year, although there now is a greater level of standard equipment. Loaded Signature models still cost less than $50K.
