We break down the pluses and minuses of the Wrangler's three new powertrain combinations.
The 2020 Jeep Wrangler can be had in a dizzying array of configurations with a range of various engine types, including two new ones: a non-hybrid turbocharged inline-four and a hybridized version of the standard V-6. Read the full story here.
The Wrangler's optional eTorque V-6 is based on the standard 3.6-liter engine but with a belt-driven motor-generator that can assist the powertrain with up to an additional 90 lb-ft of torque.
Because the motor only assists at low rpm, the rated output for the hybrid V-6 remains the same as the base V-6: 285 horsepower at 6400 rpm and 260 lb-ft of torque.
The Wrangler's optional turbo 2.0-liter inline-four is identical to the optional hybrid four, except it lacks the low-rpm torque boost of 71 lb-ft provided by the electric motor.
With or without hybrid assistance, the Wrangler's 2.0-liter option develops a responsive 270 horsepower at 5250 rpm and a healthy 295 lb-ft of torque at 3000 rpm.
Both the hybrid V-6 and the non-hybrid 2.0-liter can only be paired with the Wrangler's optional eight-speed automatic transmission, which costs $2000 to $2750, depending on the model.
The hybrid V-6 is only available in the four-door Wrangler Unlimited's Sahara trim level for $3250. The non-hybrid four is optional on all Wrangler models except the Sahara.
Our hybrid V-6 test vehicle, a four-door Unlimited Sahara model, was slightly heavier and slower than a comparable non-hybrid version we previously tested. It also returned a negligible fuel-economy improvement.
Engine choice does little to alter the Wrangler's on-road behavior, which can range from tolerable to almost wooly, depending on wheelbase and tire selection.
Both of our well-optioned test vehicles topped $50,000, but it is entirely possible to equip a new Wrangler and push the price to more than $65K.
An upcoming plug-in hybrid option called 4xe will be the sixth powertrain offered in the JL-spec Wrangler when it becomes available later this year.
