Under the hood of the X2 M35i lies a tuned version of the lesser model's turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-four, which makes 302 horsepower.
Whereas the standard X2 required 6.3 seconds to reach 60 mph in our testing, the M35i blasted through that mark in just 4.5 seconds.
The M35i's quarter-mile time was also much quicker than the base version's: 13.1 seconds at 105 mph.
Among tiny SUVs, only the Mercedes-AMG GLA45 4Matic was quicker in our testing, zipping to 60 mph in just 3.9 seconds and on to a quarter-mile pass of 12.4 seconds at 111 mph.
The X2 M35i is a driver's car through and through. Its handling is sharp, and the powertrain is eager, but the compromise to all that performance potential is a painfully harsh ride.
This Bimmer's cabin is crafted from nice materials, although the design feels dated, having been lifted almost entirely from the boxier X1, which has been on sale for several years.
The X2's front-seat passengers will be comfortable, but those in the back may complain that there's not enough leg- or headroom.
Cargo capacity in the X2 is compromised, largely thanks to the X2's swoopy roofline. In our testing, it held two fewer carry-on-size boxes than the more conventionally packaged X1.
Our X2 M35i xDrive test vehicle carried a price of $55,020 but came loaded with goodies, such as 20-inch wheels, a panoramic sunroof, red leather upholstery, and the Premium package.
We consider the X2 M35i to be more of a hot hatchback than an SUV, but whatever BMW wants to call it is fine with us.
