The fourth-generation Highlander is powered by a standard 3.5-liter V-6 that develops 295 horsepower and 263 lb-ft of torque.
The Highlander's V-6 comes paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission and standard front-wheel drive. All-wheel drive is optional, with the system on the top Limited and Platinum trim levels featuring a torque-vectoring rear differential.
The new Highlander hybrid is motivated by a 2.5-liter Atkinson-cycle inline-four, a continuously variable automatic transmission with two electric motor-generators, and a nickel-metal-hydride battery pack. Combined output is 243 horsepower.
Front-wheel drive is standard for the first time on the Highlander hybrid; an all-wheel-drive system composed of an additional electric motor on the rear axle is optional.
Toyota claims that it has reduced the curb weight of the new Highlander by roughly 250 pounds for V-6–powered models and slightly more for the hybrid.
Wheel sizes for the Highlander range from standard 18-inchers to optional 20s.
Maximum towing capacity is rated at 5000 pounds with the V-6 and 3500 for the hybrid.
A modest 2.4-inch stretch in the Highlander's wheelbase and overall length went entirely to increasing cargo room. There are now 16 cubic feet of space, 2 cubic feet more than before, behind the third row of seats.
A standard 4.2-inch digital display in the Highlander's instrument cluster can be upgraded to a 7.0-inch unit. Likewise, its standard 8.0-inch central touchscreen can be upsized to a massive 12.3-inch setup.
Toyota's Safety Sense 2.0 bundle of driver assists, which ranges from adaptive cruise control to front and rear automatic emergency braking, is now standard across the Highlander lineup.
