Lower and shorter than the conventional GLE-class SUV, the GLE coupe claims to offer a sportier driving character to match more stylized exterior.
Despite the coupe name, AMG's GLE53 is still a sizeable vehicle—195.3 inches long and roughly 5250 pounds.
The GLE53 uses the same powertrain as the existing Mercedes-AMG E53: a 3.0-liter inline-six bolstered by a turbocharger, an electrically driven supercharger, and a 48-volt motor-generator.
Peak power from the GLE53's internal-combustion engine is 429 horsepower, with the electric motor capable of contributing up to 21 hp for brief periods.
The electric motor-generator's contribution to torque is potentially more substantial. The gasoline engine produces up to 384 lb-ft, while at the low end the electric motor can bolster the engine with up to 184 lb-ft of assistance.
The engine also uses a 48-volt electric supercharger to boost intake pressure at low rpm before the turbo has spooled up, eliminating almost all sense of lag.
Much of the GLE coupe's interior is shared with the regular GLE model, both using the same dashboard, center console, instruments, and switchgear.
Space in the back of the GLE coupe is limited, as the wheelbase is 2.4 inches shorter than the regular car's. That results in noticeably less rear legroom.
We estimate the GLE53 can accelerate from zero to 60 mph in 5.0 seconds. If that doesn't knock your proverbial socks off, which it shouldn't, there is always the 603-hp GLE63 S Coupe.
Somewhat improbably, the GLE53 is available with the same Track Pace data-logging system as other AMG models, meaning you can record a full set of data on racetracks that are loaded into its memory.
