Audi's fourth-generation S8 luxury sports sedan flaunts big power, impressive technology, and contemporary elegance to lead the A8 lineup.
The fourth-generation in 2020 Audi S8 follows the mold of its predecessors as a grand luxury performance near-limousine, only this time it's situated at the top of Audi's A8 lineup.
While a more powerful Plus model may join the S8 lineup later, the standard model has plenty of thrust from its twin-turbo 4.0-liter V-8 with 563 horses and 590 lb-ft of torque.
The latest Audi S8 features a standard eight-speed automatic transmission, all-wheel drive, and a torque-vectoring rear differential.
Pricing for the S8 starts at $131,795.
The S8 should easily be capable of sub-four-second zero-to-60-mph times; claimed top speed is a governed 155 mph.
An optional carbon-ceramic brake package sheds more than 20 pounds of unsprung weight from the S8 versus the standard brake setup. It also should greatly reduce brake-dust buildup.
The S8 comes with 20-inch wheels with 21s optional.
The S8's powertrain is bolstered by a 48-volt mild-hybrid system that includes a belt-driven motor-generator and a small lithium-ion battery. The system does not directly contribute to powering the car.
Along with four-wheel-steering, the S8's additional load of standard performance technology includes an active suspension, which can scan the road ahead to anticipate bumps, lean the car into corners by up to three degrees, and raise the car up when its doors are opened, aiding ingress and egress.
The 2020 S8 supplants the previous A8 W-12 model at the top of the A8 lineup.
The S8's interior upgrades include carbon-fiber trim, seats with diamond-pattern stitching and embossed S8 logos, and an updated 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster with S8-specific displays.
