The GLE350's performance is impressively brisk for an entry-level model, with our 4Matic all-wheel-drive test car posting a 6.6-second zero-to-60-mph time.
A standard nine-speed automatic transmission is a highlight, shifting almost imperceptibly under the sort of gentle use that this vehicle handles especially well.
Mercedes's turbo 2.0-liter inline-four sounds more muscular than its capacity would lead you to expect, and the GLE350 drives with the sort of grown-up assurance you'd expect from a Benz. Output is 255 horsepower and 273 lb-ft of torque.
The GLE's passenger space is good for both front and rear passengers, with an optional pop-up third row to boost accommodations further.
Twin 12.3-inch information displays are standard, one for the digital instrument panel and the other for the central infotainment system.
Mercedes new MBUX human-machine interface works decently well, although we found it is easy to input unwanted commands through the touch pad on the center console.
The options on our example are plentiful and expensive, and it is easy to turn even the base GLE into a seriously expensive vehicle. Our test car had $14,640 worth of extras, pushing it to the final cost of $71,835.
Steel springs are standard on the GLE350 and its ride comfort is reasonably good, although we noticed lots of vertical movement over poorly maintained surfaces. Air springs and adaptive dampers are a $1710 option.
Grip levels are good for an SUV of this type, with 21-inch all-season tires helping the GLE350 generate 0.92 g of lateral adhesion on the skidpad.
