We escaped chilly Michigan for a quiet test drive of both the 2020 Alfa Romeo Giulia and 2020 Stelvio in southern Italy. There was a fair bit of pasta and pizza involved, too.
No mechanical changes have been made to the latest Giulia and Stelvio, so both drive as nicely and with as much poise as last year's models.
Experiencing the Giulia and Stelvio on Italy's narrow city streets and scenic back roads adds an extra level of romance that's hard to find in America, even if the Stelvio feels a little large and out of place at times.
Both of the updated 2020 Alfas receive a new 8.8-inch infotainment system as standard. It employs a new touchscreen interface with crisper graphics and more customizability.
Navigation is optional on both the 2020 Giulia and Stelvio. We found it to be slow to update at times, which resulted in a few missed turns.
The center console of both Alfas has been restyled to include more storage, higher-quality control knobs and switches, a new leather-wrapped shift lever, and an optional wireless device charging pad.
Driver-assistance features get a leg up this year as well, and in addition to some new optional features, automated emergency braking is now standard across both the Giulia and Stelvio lineups.
A new optional semi-autonomous driving mode won't let the driver be fully hands off, but it does an admirable job of centering the Giulia and Stelvio in their lane and can provide respite from stop-and-go traffic.
Neither Alfa receives much in the way of exterior styling enhancements, but the Stelvio can now be ordered with a body-color styling kit that replaces the gray plastic lower exterior trim.
Quadrifoglio versions of the Giulia and Stelvio will get their own updates, but Alfa Romeo hasn't yet announced details of the changes.
