The 2021 Polestar 1, as the torch bearer for the Polestar brand under the Geely/Volvo group, is brimming with interesting details. Click through for photos:
The gasoline engine under the Polestar 1's hood is a supercharged and turbocharged version of Volvo's 2.0-liter inline-four. It develops 326 horsepower and 321 lb-ft of torque.
The 1's gas engine is supplemented by a 71-hp integrated starter-generator and a pair of 114-hp electric motors in back, one for each rear wheel.
The Polestar 1's outside door handles are flush when closed but flip open when you depress the circle on the front of the handle. However, the housing surrounding this latch is a separate piece from the door skin, detracting from the cleanness of the design.
A rear spoiler extends from the trunklid at 62 mph to improve high-speed stability. It automatically retracts at 44 mph.
The electronic shifter for the Polestar 1's eight-speed automatic transmission is topped with a crystal knob.
The Polestar 1's charging ports sit behind a door on the left side of the car. (Gas goes into the filler behind the right-side door.) The electric port will accept up to 50 kW of power, resulting in a charge time of less than an hour.
The Polestar 1's transparent roof consists of laminated glass panels sandwiching a plastic layer that filters both UV and most infrared light waves. But there is no mechanical or electric means of shading the glass ceiling.
Lovely metal detailing on the driver's door integrates the Bowers & Wilkins speaker grilles with the door handles and also coordinates with the metallic trim that surrounds the cockpit.
2021 Polestar 1 front cabin
Rear-seat room in the Polestar 1 is tight. Only a toddler's legs would fit in the space left by a nearly six-foot-tall driver's front seat position.
