The X4 M's new twin-turbo 3.0-liter inline-six, dubbed S58, is the most powerful road-going six-cylinder engine BMW has ever made.
The X4 M is available in two strengths: the 473-hp standard model and the 503-hp Competition variant.
BMW's xDrive all-wheel drive is standard on the X4 M and is rear-biased in its torque distribution for sharper handling responses.
The X4 M's interior includes a digital instrument display, iDrive infotainment with both touchscreen and scrolling-wheel interfaces, and the unintuitive sideways-shifting gear selector that BMW reserves for its M models.
The Competition version of the X4 M brings a standard sport exhaust, firmer anti-roll bars, and 21-inch wheels, as well as an increase in power.
The X4 M Competition can blast from zero to 60 mph in just 3.3 seconds, making it one of the fastest SUVs we have ever tested.
Additional bracing fortifies the X4 M's structure to help it cope with the huge forces its chassis can generate.
The X4 M's braking system includes 15.6-inch rotors with four-piston calipers at the front and 14.6-inch rotors with single pistons at the rear.
Space in back seat of the X4 M is tight for adult occupants, and it shares the same upright seat back as the regular X4.
An optional M Driver's package ups the X4 M Competition's top speed from a claimed 155 to 176 mph. Without the package we reached 161 mph.
