The GT500 is powered by a supercharged 5.2-liter V-8 making 760 horsepower and 625 lb-ft of torque, which is sent to the rear wheels through a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.
Ford claims the Shelby GT500 is capable of running to 60 mph in 3.3 seconds on its way to a 10.7-second quarter-mile; we think those number will be closer to 3.5 and 11.0. Ford also caps the top speed at 180 mph with a governor.
Pricing for the 2020 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 begins at $73,995 but reaches beyond $95,000 for a fully loaded model.
The GT500's $18,500 Carbon-Fiber Track Package deletes the rear seats and adds 20-inch carbon-fiber wheels, a two-position rear wing, adjustable top mounts for the front struts, Recaro bucket seats, front-splitter extensions, and Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires.
The Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 delivers exceptional ride quality and absolute body control thanks to standard magnetorheological dampers.
The GT500's seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission is controlled by a rotary knob and paddle shifters mounted to the steering wheel. Discerning drivers who insist on a manual transmission will have to make do with its less-powerful stablemate, the 526-hp Shelby GT350.
While the Shelby GT500 shares its engine block with the GT350, the two engines are significantly different. In addition to being supercharged, the GT500 ditches the GT350's flat-plane crankshaft for a more conventional cross-plane crank.
A 12.0-inch digital instrument cluster and a steering wheel wrapped in leather and Alcantara are standard on all GT500s.
The GT500 stops faithfully with Brembo six-piston brake calipers clamping 16.5-inch rotors in front and four-piston binders working on 14.6-inch discs out back.
With the arrival of the 2020 Shelby GT500, the Mustang lineup is nearly as comprehensive as the Porsche 911 range. Think of the Shelby GT350 as Ford's 911 GT3, while the GT500 is the metaphorical 911 GT2 RS.
