With loads of technology and strong value, Hyundai's redesigned 2020 Sonata family sedan is more than just a pretty face.
It's a comely thing, this new-for-2020 Hyundai Sonata, both inside and out. Hyundai is leveraging not only value but style and smart design with this new midsize sedan. And you'll still get that killer warranty.
Two engines will be available in the 2020 Sonata. Our test car, a range-topping Limited trim, comes standard with Hyundai's turbocharged 1.6-liter inline-four good for 180 horsepower. SE and SEL trims get a naturally aspirated 2.5-liter four that makes more power—191 horsepower to be exact. Both come with an eight-speed automatic transmission.
The Sonata's Limited's 7.3-second run to 60 mph won't matter to anyone buying a midsize sedan. It's quick enough.
Those chrome strips running the length of the Sonata's hood are partially illuminated. Because illuminated chrome is a thing the world hasn't yet asked for.
The Sonata won't light the world on fire with its driving dynamics, but it also won't embarrass itself. Hyundai's wins with this sedan are in other arenas.
The 10.3-inch infotainment touchscreen is standard on Limited trims and optional on SEL and SEL Plus models.
Even the big boys can sit in back of the new Sonata—behind other big boys.
A 12.3-inch LCD instrument display gives the Sonata's driver something interesting to look at when changing drive modes.
Pricing isn't yet finalized for the Sonata, but Hyundai says option-heavy Limited trims like our test car will cost about $33,000.
The Sonata isn't the sharpest-handling midsize sedan (see: Honda Accord.) Distilling dynamic virtues into this class still eludes many carmakers, including Hyundai.
We like the Sonata's slopping hood and fastback treatment, but the market can be fickle, so it's certainly a bold move for Hyundai.
