Despite a weight reduction and the added driver involvement of a manual gearbox, Aston's limited-edition Vantage could be more engaging still.

While only 200 of the $183,081 Aston Martin Vantage AMRs will be built, the Graziano-sourced seven-speed manual transmission will become an option on regular Vantage models in early 2020.
The Vantage AMR's seven-speed gearbox features a dogleg first gear in the lower-left corner of the shift pattern directly below reverse, making the one-two shift an over-and-up affair.
Aston says it benchmarked the Porsche Cayman for the control relationships in the Vantage AMR.
Unfortunately, the AMR's shifter moves with clunky engagement through tightly spaced gates and is topped by a less than impressive leather-wrapped shift knob.
To trim a claimed 220 pounds, Aston applied various weight-reduction efforts for the AMR, including the switch to a mechanical limited-slip differential and standard 20-inch forged aluminum wheels and carbon-ceramic brake rotors.
While horsepower from the AMR's AMG-sourced twin-turbo 4.0-liter V-8 is the same 503 ponies as in lesser Vantage models, Aston has reduced its torque output from 505 lb-ft to 461 in order to protect the manual gearbox from damage. Further, torque is limited in first and second gears to prevent excess wheelspin.
Mechanical changes to the AMR include an updated master cylinder and brake booster, stiffer rear spring rates, and a stiffer rear anti-roll bar.
Should you be less than proficient at heel-and-down downshifting, Aston's selectable AMShift system provides automatic rev matching capability.
Although there's little clutch-pedal feel to speak of in the AMR, decent weighting and progressive takeup make for smooth engagement.
Additional touches for the AMR include new carbon-fiber vents on the hood and front fenders, as well as a bunch of standard kit that's optional on regular Vantages, including a sport exhaust system with quad pipes, sport bucket seats, and lots of dark interior and exterior trim.
