The new mid-engine Vette's standard 6.2-liter LT2 V-8 makes 490 horsepower and 465 lb-ft of torque in standard trim or 495 horses and 470 lb-ft with the performance exhaust that's part of the Z51 Performance package.
The C8 is almost 200 pounds heavier than the C7 it replaces but horsepower is up by 35, which keeps the weight-to-power ratios between the two virtually identical.
The C8 comes only with an automatic transmission, an eight-speed dual-clutch unit produced by Tremec.
Moving the C8's engine aft of the cabin produced an optimum front-to-rear weight distribution of roughly 40/60 percent.
The Z51 Performance package includes a comprehensive list of mechanical and aerodynamic upgrades that make the C8 fully track-capable.
All Corvettes are equipped with Brembo brakes; Z51 models receive upsized rotors.
The C8's interior is handsome and well laid out with the best materials and assembly quality ever seen in a Corvette.
Three types of seats are offered: base GT1s, highly supportive GT2s, and aggressive Competition Sport buckets.
The C8 has enough cargo carrying space in the rear to handle a pair of golf bags, as well as a front trunk that can accept a carry-on bag.
