The M brand's biggest coupe and convertible are effortlessly quick but still a little sterile.

Like its M5 brethren, the M8 Competition has a 617-hp 4.4-liter V-8. The standard M8 comes with only 600 trotting ponies.
Should you prefer your massive 617-hp two-door to be roofless, there's always the M8 convertible to coif your mane.
All M8s are all-wheel drive. Because power output is now at Full Stupid, two tires are not enough to put the torque to the ground. It's a problem, but it's a good one.
If hoon time is what you want, the M8 will oblige with a rear-drive mode. No Walmart parking lot is safe if BMW starts handing these out to high-school juniors.
The truth is that as long as you keep stability control enabled, you have to try pretty hard to get the M8 out of shape. And even in its more aggressive modes, slip angles are modest.
Every version of the M8 will use ZF's excellent eight-speed automatic transmission. It's a fine gearbox that feels every bit as quick as a dual-clutch and is smoother than most.
Ride quality in Comfort mode is genuinely soft. It's possible BMW understands who buys these cars. Hint: not high-school juniors.
It's not clear what advantage the M8's laterally moving shifter offers over a conventional automatic's longitudinal shifter. But that's what you get in the M brand: unjustified weirdness.
We can do without the M8's electrically boosted brakes. Proper tuning isn't just having more knobs to turn. It's turning them well that matters.
Perhaps the only real problem with the M8 is its proximity in experience to the lesser M850i. Though quicker, it's hard to say it's better.
