The 2020 BMW 840i Gran Coupe, the entry-level model in BMW's new four-door Gran Coupe lineup, builds on the goodness of the 8-series coupe and convertible by offering greater passenger space and arguably better looks.
The mechanicals of the 8-series Gran Coupe mirror those of the two-door 8, including a 335-hp turbo 3.0-liter inline-six in the 840i and a 523-hp twin-turbo 4.4-liter V-8 in the M850i.
All Gran Coupes utilize a standard ZF-sourced eight-speed automatic transmission. BMW's xDrive all-wheel drive is optional on the 840i and standard on the M850i.
Our 840i Gran Coupe test car reached 60 mph in 4.7 seconds and covered the quarter-mile in 13.3 at 106 mph.
With its 20-inch Michelin Pilot Sport 3 ZP summer tires, the rear-drive 840i clung to the skidpad with 0.95 g of grip and stopped from 70 mph in 161 feet.
While highly composed and capable, the Gran Coupe unfortunately suffers from the same numb steering and weak connection to the car's front end that we've noticed in other large BMWs.
While styling is subjective, it's hard not to appreciate the finer balance of the Gran Coupe's proportions versus the already shapely 8-series two-door models.
The Gran Coupe's additional 7.9 inches of wheelbase goes almost entirely to greater rear passenger space.
The Gran Coupe's aft quarters are a far more enjoyable place to sit than those in the coupe and convertible, although headroom is limited for taller passengers, and three-abreast seating in back should be reserved for brief jaunts.
The rest of the Gran Coupe's interior is shared with the two-door 8-series, including BMW's latest instrument cluster, steering wheel, center console, and infotainment setups.
The 840i Gran Coupe's $85,895 starting price is $3000 cheaper than its two-door coupe sibling's and $1550 less than a BMW 740i sedan's.
