The 2020 Porsche Taycan Turbo S makes 750 horsepower and 774 lb-ft of torque, although that peak output is only available for 2.5 seconds at a time. We predict that thrust will propel the electric Porsche to 60 mph in 2.6 seconds.
The Porsche Taycan features the first multispeed transmission in a production electric vehicle. The low first gear allows for quicker acceleration. Second gear is used for improved efficiency and to reach the 162-mph top speed.
The Porsche Taycan is roughly the same length and width as the Tesla Model S, but the roof sits about two inches lower and makes for a significantly smaller-feeling cabin. Anyone taller than six feet will have a tough time getting comfortable in the rear seats.
The Porsche Taycan’s interior features a digital instrument cluster, two touchscreens in the center stack, and a gimmicky display in front of the passenger for an additional $1130.
The Porsche Taycan Turbo S comes standard on 21-inch wheels, and the Turbo model rides on 20-inch rollers.
The 2020 Porsche Taycan Turbo S uses a 93.4-kWh lithium-ion battery fitted under the floor. Using the most powerful chargers, the battery can be replenished from 5 to 80 percent in 22.5 minutes.
Most electric vehicles allow the driver to negotiate most traffic via one-pedal driving, slowing the vehicle using the electric motors’ regenerative braking. In the Porsche Taycan, there’s only minimal regenerative braking until the driver presses the brake pedal, a philosophical choice made by Porsche engineers who believe there’s more control for the driver in using one pedal instead of two to modulate deceleration.
The Porsche Taycan is available in either a four- or five-seat configuration.
Pricing for the 2020 Porsche Taycan Turbo S starts at $186,350. The Turbo model opens at $152,250.
Porsche is launching the Taycan with the most expensive, highest performance versions. Additional, lesser variants are inevitable.
