The Zero SR/F's AC motor fits in the space where gas motorcycles position a multigear transmission. It makes 110 horsepower and 140 lb-ft of torque.
A 14.4-kWh lithium-ion battery is said to be good for 161 miles in the city but just 82 miles at a constant 70 mph. In Car and Driver's 75-mph highway test, we recorded a range of 70 miles.
In place of a gas motorcycle's fuel tank, the Zero SR/F offers a small storage bin with two USB charging ports.
The Zero SR/F has four preset driving modes (Eco, Rain, Sport, and Street) and allows riders to create their own customized mode with a Bluetooth-connected phone.
Zero says the SR/F accelerates to 60 mph in 3.0 seconds. It's as efficient as it is quick, too. We averaged 319 MPGe. Chew on that, Prius owners.
With no clutch or shifter to occupy the rider's left hand and foot, this streetfighter bike is almost scooter-like in its simplicity and ease of operation.
The Zero SR/F starts at $19,990. The $21,990 Premium model adds heated handgrips, a more powerful charger, aluminum bar ends, and a fly screen.
The standard model completes a full recharge in 4.5 hours, while the SR/F Premium does the same task in 2.5 hours, thanks to its six-kilowatt charging capability. Both versions can be upgraded with a rapid-charge option to bring recharge times under two hours. There is no option for DC fast charging.
Zero, which has been in business for 13 years, has established the standards that all other electric motorcycles are measured against.
