Every Angle of the 2020 McLaren GT
Using the same building blocks as other McLarens, the new GT can't quite escape its roots.
The 2020 McLaren GT is the latest variation on the mid-engine theme from the British supercar maker. It has an extra dose of comfort, modesty, and practicality (or at least an extra half-dose). Read the full story here.
Subtle colors and just a touch of chrome trim aim to pump up this grand tourer's visual elegance.
The 15-spoke wheels shown here, sized 20 inches up front and 21 in the rear, are GT options. A seven-spoke design comes standard. As do iron brake rotors. Carbon-ceramic units are optional.
For the low price of $6000, McLaren will fit your GT with an electrochromic roof panel that lightens or darkens at the push of a button. That's not cheap, but it's more than $3000 less than a similar panel on the 720S Spider.
Like all modern McLarens, the GT has a mid-mounted twin-turbocharged V-8, which is bolted to a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.
McLaren is proud of the GT's smooth, largely uninterrupted bodywork. There are fewer obvious aerodynamic nibs and tabs and wings and vanes than there are on other McLarens.
The area above a very hot engine is probably not the best place for a cargo hold. McLaren does what it can to keep the temperature reasonable. The company has been partly successful in that regard.
With its crazy-opening doors and an overall height of less than 48 inches, the GT is not appreciably easier to get into or out of than other McLarens.
The interior can be wrapped in soft nappa leather. But wood veneers and chrome vents remain the domain of Bentley, not McLaren.
The GT's suspension is similar to the 570S's but with a softer tune for the springs and anti-roll bars. As a result, this McLaren provides a silky ride without much loss of sharpness compared with its stablemates.
The GT's electrohydraulic steering is beautifully balanced, linear as can be, and communitive without being obtrusively chatty. It is all goodness.
