Despite its boy-racer looks, including the chunky 19-inch wheels, lower body add-ons, and the strut-mounted rear wing, the Camry TRD does look better in person than in photos.
The Camry TRD's unique 19-inch wheels are 3.1 pounds lighter and 0.5 inch wider than the XSE model's 19s.
The TRD's front brake rotors measure 12.9 inches across, 0.9 inch larger than lesser models'. They're also clamped by dual-piston calipers instead of single-piston units, which helps to improve the TRD's brake feel and resistance to fade under heavy use.
The TRD sits 0.6 inch lower than the Camry V-6 XSE on revised dampers and stiffer springs and anti-roll bars, which greatly improves body control in corners.
The Camry TRD's chassis is stiffened by underbody braces and a V-brace behind the rear seats.
TRD does not fiddle with the Camry's 3.5-liter V-6, which produces the same 301 horsepower and 267 lb-ft of torque as other six-cylinder Camrys.
An eight-speed automatic is the only transmission available on the Camry TRD. Combined with the V-6, it should result in a zero-to-60-mph time of less than six seconds.
A TRD exhaust system nicely accentuates the Camry V-6's voice, albeit with some droning at highway speed.
While much more responsive and entertaining to drive than lesser Camry models, the TRD does ride rather firm.
At $31,995 to start, the TRD is the least expensive six-cylinder Camry and a respectable performance bargain.
