Under the XC60's hood, Polestar juices the T8's turbo- and supercharged 2.0-liter inline-four for an extra 15 horsepower and 22 lb-ft of torque. With the same 87-hp electric motor as the regular T8, the Polestar Engineered makes a total of 415 horses and 494 lb-ft.

Of course, being a plug-in hybrid, the XC60 T8 Polestar Engineered can be plugged in to charge its 11.6-kW lithium-ion battery, affording owners a limited electric-only driving range. Volvo predicts the XC60 T8 Polestar Engineered will be capable of accelerating from a rest to 60 mph in less than five seconds.

Among the XC60's crazier features are its manually adjustable Öhlins coil-over dampers, which, unlike most modern adjustable suspensions, are not electronically controlled. That means in order to change their stiffness, you must use a tool and physically adjust them from outside the car.

The interior is subtly dressed up with gold-colored seatbelts, but is otherwise as fetching and luxurious as a regular XC60's.

At $72,045, the XC60 T8 Polestar Engineered comes fully loaded with Volvo's latest safety features, including adaptive cruise control, a lane-centering system, automated emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, and more.

Was the world asking for a high-performance compact luxury crossover from Volvo with race-car adjustable suspension components that also is a plug-in hybrid? Who knows, but those who buy into the experience will be getting a swift, grippy, and supremely under-the-radar performance SUV.
