Volvo has updated the XC90's look, if only barely. The front end gets a new, concave grille design plus a restyled bumper.
New wheel designs round out the exterior changes on the 2020 XC90.
There is more chrome trim all over the XC90, including on the rear bumper.
Inside, the XC90 gains a super attractive new "tailored wool" upholstery option, which wraps the seats in a business suit-like material.
For the first time, Volvo is offering an optional six-seat interior option. A seven-seat configuration remains standard, but the six-seater places two captain's chairs in the second row instead of a three-person bench seat to lend the third row a greater sense of spaciousness.
The 400-hp T8 plug-in hybrid model receives a new braking setup that actuates the mechanical brakes using an electric solenoid instead of vacuum pressure. This benefits the brake feel and smooths the transition between the regenerative mode (during which the electric motor-generators slow the car by converting inertia into electricity to recharge the battery pack) and the friction brakes taking over to bring the vehicle to a stop.
Volvo also ups the T8's lithium-ion battery from a 10.4-kWh capacity to 11.6-kWh, a move said to benefit real-world electric-only driving range.
The rest of the XC90's powertrains go unchanged, meaning the base T5 variant still uses a 250-hp turbocharged four-cylinder engine, while the mid-level T6 gets the T8's 316-hp turbo- and supercharged four-cylinder engine (minus the T8's electric motors, of course).
Pricing and fuel economy don't change much for the 2020 Volvo XC90. Volvo anticipates that, with its slightly larger battery, the range-topping T8 plug-in hybrid will get an 18-mile electric-only range rating, one mile farther than before.
Volvo has continuously upgraded the current-generation XC90 since its release for 2016—and we don't anticipate these changes will be the model's last before it is replaced again in a few years' time.
