The new heavy-duty GMC Sierra is nearly mechanically identical to the equally fresh 2020 Chevy Silverado HD, including its standard all-new 6.6-liter gasoline V-8, good for 401 horsepower and 464 lb-ft of torque, mated to a six-speed automatic transmission.
The 2020 Sierra HD's optional Duramax turbocharged 6.6-liter diesel V-8 goes largely untouched for the new model year, still making 445 horsepower and 910 lb-ft of torque.
Mated to the Sierra HD's optional diesel engine is an upgraded and smooth-shifting Allison 10-speed automatic transmission in place of the previous six-speed Allison unit.
GMC expects more than half of Sierra HD shoppers to opt for the top-level Denali trim with the $9890 Duramax diesel engine/Allison transmission upgrade.
The 2020 Sierra HD can tow up to 35,500 pounds and carry up to 3615 pounds in its rear cargo bed; all dual-rear-wheel 3500 models are rated to tow at least 30,000 pounds.
GMC's six-way MultiPro tailgate is standard on SLT, AT4, and Denali models and optional on lesser trim levels.
The Sierra's MultiPro tailgate also can be fitted with an optional dealer-installed Kicker audio system for tailgate parties and other outdoor activities.
An available ProGrade Trailering system can offer up to 15 different views from eight cameras, including (optionally) one on the back of the trailer and one inside.
In addition to traditional 2 HI, 4 HI, and 4 Low settings, the two-speed transfer case of all-wheel-drive Sierra HD models now features a 4 Auto setting that automatically engages the front axle when it detects wheel slip at the rear.
As with the 2020 Chevy Silverado HD, the Sierra HD is available with a configurable 15.0-inch head-up display.
While the new Sierra HD's cabin is significantly more spacious and high-tech than before, it still could benefit from nicer materials and greater differentiation from its Chevrolet sibling.
