Two flat-four engines are offered—a 182-hp 2.5-liter and a 260-hp turbocharged 2.4-liter. Every Legacy has all-wheel drive and a continuously variable automatic transmission.
With the base engine, we estimate that the new Legacy will be able to hit 60 mph in a languid 8.5 seconds, but opting for the turbo four should decrease that figure to a more acceptable 6.3 seconds.
Subaru claims the new Legacy boasts a 70-percent increase in torsional rigidity.
Although the new Legacy is quiet, comfortable, and confident on twisty roads, it still lacks the driving verve of some of its competitors, particularly the Honda Accord.
The biggest upgrades to the Legacy are inside its restyled cabin, which sports a large 11.6-inch vertically oriented infotainment display in all but the base model.
Soft-touch materials can be found on nearly all surfaces of the interior, and top-spec Touring models come with nappa leather upholstery on the seats.
Subaru improved the Legacy's cargo capacity for 2020 as well, and it can now fit four international-sized suitcases inside its trunk.
The company's EyeSight suite of driver-assistance features is standard across the lineup and includes an adaptive cruise control system with a lane-centering feature.
Legacy pricing starts at $23,645 for the 2.5-liter. Upgrading to a Legacy with the turbo engine will cost at least $35,095.
Expect the 2020 Legacy in Subaru showrooms before the end of 2019.
