Cadillac's CT6-V Shows Off the New Blackwing V-8
With production slated to end in January 2020, the 550-hp Cadillac CT6-V sports sedan is a dead man sprinting.
The Cadillac CT6 and CT6-V are the first vehicles to use the new Blackwing V-8, an overhead-cam engine that delivers more refinement than GM's pushrod small-block V-8.
The Cadillac CT6-V competes against sporty versions of large luxury sedans such as the Audi S8, the BMW M760i, and the Mercedes-Benz S63.
Relatively light for its size, the CT6-V is the most agile of the luxury flagship sedans.
The CT6-V drives all four wheels through a 10-speed automatic transmission.
The Blackwing engine uses two twin-scroll turbochargers mounted in the valley of the V-8 engine block. Rerouting the plumbing like this improves emissions and engine responsiveness.
The Blackwing 4.2-liter V-8 makes 550 horsepower and 640 lb-ft of torque in the CT6-V. A lower-output version makes 500 horsepower and 574 lb-ft in the CT6 Platinum.
The CT6's digital instrument panel gets the V treatment. And the CUE (Cadillac User Experience) infotainment system is newly equipped with a rotary control knob. You can still touch the screen to control the system as well.
The CT6-V's interior feels and looks plasticky despite a price tag approaching $100,000.
The CT6-V's handling is enhanced with summer tires developed specifically for Cadillac.
In addition to the new engine, the CT6-V features a limited-slip rear differential, retuned magnetorheological dampers, and larger brakes.
Cadillac's CT6 has been a slow seller and is currently scheduled to exit production in January 2020.
